Juan Carlos Arteche
Juan Carlos Arteche Gómez (born April 11, 1957 in Maliaño , Cantabria , † October 13, 2010 ) was a Spanish football player .
Athletic career
Arteche comes from the youth of Racing Santander , he made his debut for the club in 1975 in the Primera División . A short time later, the club gave him for the season 1975/76 to the Tercera División antretenden Gimnástica de Torrelavega , after his return he became the standing relegation home club team regular.
In 1978 Arteche moved to Atlético Madrid , where the defender quickly became a regular at the side of Luís Pereira . He won the Copa del Rey with the club in the 1984/85 season with a 2-1 win over Athletic Bilbao , and in the 1985/86 European Cup Winners' Cup he achieved the 3-0 defeat against Dynamo Kiev . As a result, he moved into the focus of the Spanish national team , for which he made his debut in November 1986. In February of the following year, his opponent Gary Lineker scored four goals in the 2-4 home defeat at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. This fourth international match was Arteche's last national team appearance.
In December 1988, the Spanish press reported a dispute between some Atlético players and President Jesús Gil , including Arteche, who announced his retirement due to the dispute. In eleven seasons with the capital club, he had played 308 league games. At times he was the team captain of the club.
In October 2010, Arteche died at the age of 53 years of a cancer .
