The Zella-Mehlis – Wernshausen line is a branch line in Thuringia . It connects Zella-Mehlis on the edge of the Thuringian Forest with Wernshausen in the Werra Valley.

history

The Wernshausen – Schmalkalden section was opened on April 2, 1874. At that time, the route was financed by the city of Schmalkalden, which initially also owned it. On July 1, 1890, it then became the property of the Prussian State Railways . The next section from Schmalkalden to Steinbach-Hallenberg went into operation on December 15, 1891 and on January 25, 1893 the last section between Steinbach-Hallenberg and Zella-Mehlis followed. Since November 3, 1892, a branch line to Kleinschmalkalden and Brotterode branched off at Schmalkalden station . However, this was shut down on June 30, 1999.

The Süd-Thüringen-Bahn (STB) has been operating on behalf of DB AG since January 1, 2001, and since June 10, 2001, STB has been providing services in local rail transport for an initial 15 years . Here the STB 3 runs every hour from Monday to Friday with the junction in Steinbach-Hallenberg, and every two hours on weekends. During the week every second train went via Zella-Mehlis to Suhl . Diesel multiple units of the type Stadler Regio-Shuttle RS1 are used on the line . Continuous connections to Erfurt Hbf were offered from December 2017 to December 2018 .
