The station Schmalkalden is the station of the Thuringian town of Schmalkalden .

history

With the construction of the Wernshausen – Schmalkalden line , Schmalkalden received a railway connection on April 2, 1874. Fifteen years later, the line to Zella-Mehlis was extended, the first section of which went into operation on December 15, 1891 and the second on January 25, 1893. Before that, on November 3, 1892, the Schmalkalden station had become a wedge station with the opening of the branching Schmalkalden – Brotterode railway line .

In 1996, passenger traffic on the line to Brotterode, which was last used only to Kleinschmalkalden, was discontinued and then dismantled, so that the station has once again become a purely through station .

Investments

There is a large reception building between the two routes. The house platform between track 1 and the first track on the route to Brotterode had a platform roof until the renovation in 2013. There is also a central platform between track 1 and track 2, and regular traffic runs on track one. There are also a few side tracks. Platform 1 is 115 meters long and 55 centimeters high, while platform 2 is 165 meters long and 38 centimeters high.

The station building was used as an adventure station until 2011. Since 2012, the entire station area has been rebuilt for the 2015 State Garden Show. The station building was completely renovated in 2013/2014 and completed in August 2014. Instead of the tracks to Brotterode, there has been a bus station since October 2013.

The roundhouse, in which there is a timber trade, has been preserved from the former facilities.
