Fernando Sebastián Aguilar
Fernando Cardinal Sebastián Aguilar CMF (born December 14, 1929 in Calatayud , Spain ; † January 24, 2019 in Málaga ) was a Spanish religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Pamplona y Tudela .
Life
Sebastián Aguilar was a member of the Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary ("Claretians") from 1945 and was ordained a priest on June 28, 1953 . After he was initially professor of theology at seminaries of his order, he carried out the same activity from 1967 at the Pontifical University of Salamanca . In 1970, Sebastián Aguilar became dean of the local theological faculty before he was rector of the university from 1971 to 1979.
On August 22, 1979, he was appointed Bishop of León by Pope John Paul II . He was ordained episcopal on September 29th of the same year by the Archbishop of Madrid , Cardinal Vicente Enrique y Tarancón . With effect from July 28, 1983, he resigned this office and on April 8, 1988 was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Granada . Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Pamplona y Tudela on March 26, 1993 . From 1993 to 1999 and again from 2002 to 2005 he was Vice President of the Spanish Bishops' Conference . From 2003 to 2004 he was also Apostolic Administrator of Calahorra y La Calzada-Logroño during the Sedis vacancy .
On July 31, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI. Aguilar's request for resignation due to reasons of age. In the solemn consistory of February 22, 2014, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Angela Merici in the college of cardinals .
He spent his retirement in Málaga since 2007, where, among other things, he was involved in theological training and gave retreats .
Others
In January 2014, Aguilar declared that homosexual people could be cured and compared homosexuality to diseases that need treatment, such as high blood pressure . The Málaga Public Prosecutor opened a criminal investigation into "incitement to hatred based on sexual orientation " after the LGBT Colegas filed a complaint against Aguilar and the Málaga City Parliament unanimously distanced itself from the archbishop's statements.
