Juan José Omella Omella
Juan José Cardinal Omella Omella (born April 21, 1946 in Cretas , Spain ) is a Spanish clergyman and Archbishop of Barcelona .
Life
Juan José Omella Omella studied philosophy and theology at the Diocesan Seminary of Saragossa and at the White Fathers' training centers in Leuven and Jerusalem . On September 20, 1970, he received the sacrament of ordination for the Archdiocese of Saragossa . After various activities, including as a missionary in Zaire , he became Episcopal Vicar in Saragossa in 1990 .
On 15 July 1996 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Sasabe and auxiliary bishop in Zaragoza. The Archbishop of Saragossa, Elías Yanes Álvarez , donated him episcopal ordination on September 22nd of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the auxiliary bishop in Saragossa, Carmelo Borobia Isasa , and the bishop of Jaca , José María Conget Arizaleta .
On October 29, 1999, John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Barbastro-Monzón . On April 8, 2004, he was appointed Bishop of Calahorra y La Calzada-Logroño .
Pope Francis called him on November 6, 2014 to be a member of the Congregation for Bishops .
On November 6, 2015, Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Barcelona. The inauguration took place on December 26th of the same year.
Juan José Omella is involved in numerous social projects in the Holy Land. He is Grand Officer of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . Cardinal Grand Master Edwin Frederick O'Brien appointed him on November 6, 2015 to succeed Cardinal Lluís Martínez Sistach as Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy Spain-Orient of the Papal Lay Order.
In the consistory of June 28, 2017, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme in the college of cardinals . The takeover of his titular church took place on January 21 of the following year.
On December 23, 2017, the Pope appointed him a member of the Congregation for Bishops and of the Apostolic Signature .
In the Spanish Bishops' Conference , Omella has been President of the Commission for Pastoral Care since 2003. In March 2020 he was elected Chairman of the Spanish Bishops' Conference for a term that will run until 2024 .
