Ambrosio Echebarria Arroita

Ambrosio Echebarría Arroita (born April 1, 1922 in Zeberio , Bizkaia , † December 6, 2010 in Bilbao ) was a Spanish Catholic clergyman and from 1974 to 1999 Bishop of Barbastro-Monzón .

Life

Echebarria Arroita was ordained a priest in Vitoria-Gasteiz on June 29, 1947 after studying theology and philosophy . He received his doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical University of Comillas .

Pope Paul VI appointed him in 1974 bishop of the Diocese of Barbastro-Monzón. He received his episcopal ordination on November 2, 1974, the military archbishop of Spain , José López Ortiz OSA; Co- consecrators were Pedro Cantero Cuadrado , Archbishop of Saragossa , and Francisco Peralta y Ballabriga , Bishop of Vitoria .

His age-related resignation was granted in 1999 by Pope John Paul II .

Act

In addition to his office as bishop, he was a member of the Episcopal Commission for Pastoral Social Work (Comisión Episcopal de Pastoral Social) . Shortly afterwards, at a meeting of the Spanish Bishops' Conference, he advocated the establishment of a separate institution for prison chaplaincy . After founding the Delegación Episcopal de Pastoral Penitenciaria in 1981, he was its director from 1981 to 1990. For the work done there, he was awarded the silver medal of the General Directorate for Prisons.

During his tenure he campaigned for the beatification of the Claretian priests Felipe de Jesus Munarriz , Ceferino "El Pelé" Giménez Malla and Florentino Asensio Baroso , who were shot in August 1936 shortly after the start of the Spanish Civil War . The beatification of de Jesus Munarriz took place on October 25, 1992 and of Giménez Malla and Asensio Baroso on May 4, 1997 by Pope John Paul II.

In addition, he advocated the return of 112 works of art, which was caused by a decree of the then Apostolic Nuncio in Spain, Lajos Kada .
