Damián Iguacén Borau (born February 12, 1916 in Fuencalderas , Spain ) is a Spanish clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic bishop of San Cristóbal de La Laguna . He is currently the oldest living bishop in the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Damián Iguacén Borau studied philosophy and theology in the Theological Seminary of the Holy Cross in Huesca and was ordained a priest on June 7, 1941 . He worked first in the parishes Ibieca and Torla, then at the Igreja de Santa Engrácia and for the ordinariate in Saragossa. After a pastoral engagement in Tardienta and at the seminary, he became pastor in San Lino, later at the Iglesia-Basílica de San Lorenzo in Huesco and for the ordinariate in Huesco.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on August 10, 1970 Bishop of Barbastro . The Apostolic Nuncio in Spain , Luigi Dadaglio , ordained him episcopal on October 11 of the same year in the cathedral of Barbastro ; Co- consecrators were Pedro Cantero Cuadrado , Archbishop of Saragossa , and Cardinal Arturo Tabera Araoz CMF , Archbishop of Pamplona-Tudela . Iguacén Borau was appointed Bishop of Teruel - Albarracín on September 23, 1974 . He was the founding chairman of the Inter-Diocesan Commission for Exploring the Boundaries of the Church in Aragon.

Pope John Paul II appointed him bishop of the diocese of San Cristóbal de La Laguna on August 14, 1984 . He was chairman of the Episcopal Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Spanish Bishops' Conference from 1984 to 1993.

On June 12, 1991 Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. Damián Iguacén Borau now lives in a monastery in Huesca . Since the death of Bernardino Piñera Carvallo on June 21, 2020, he has been the oldest living Catholic bishop in the world.
