Elías Yanes Álvarez (born February 16, 1928 in Villa de Mazo ; † March 9, 2018 in Saragossa ) was a Spanish clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Saragossa .

Life

Elías Yanes Álvarez was a seminarian at the Pontifical Spanish College of St. Joseph in Rome and was ordained priest at the Eucharistic Congress in Barcelona on May 31, 1952 . He studied theology at the Pontifical University of Salamanca and received his doctorate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome in 1957 after completing a doctorate in canon law. He was involved in Catholic Action and was professor of catechesis at the Pastoral Institute of the Pontifical University of Salamanca in Madrid.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on October 28, 1970 auxiliary bishop in Oviedo and titular bishop of Mulli . The Archbishop of Oviedo Gabino Díaz Merchán donated him episcopal ordination on November 28 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were José López Ortiz OESA , Archbishop ad personam and Bishop of the Spanish Military Ordinary , and Luis Franco Cascón CSsR , Auxiliary Bishop in San Cristóbal de La Laguna o Tenerife .

On June 3, 1977 he was by Paul VI. appointed Archbishop of Saragossa . On April 2, 2005, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. He held several important offices in the Spanish Bishops' Conference: General Secretary (1972–1977), Vice President (1987–1993), President (1993–1999) and member of the Executive Committee (1999–2005). He was a member of the teaching and catechetical commission. From 1993 to 1999 he was Vice President of the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the Countries of the European Union (COMECE) .

He was the Grand Prior of the Western Spanish Lieutenancy (España Oriental) of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
