The diocese of San Cristóbal de La Laguna was established on February 1, 1819 by Pope Pius VII by dividing the diocese of Canary Islands and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Seville as a suffragan diocese. The Canary Islands diocese , which continues under the old name, extends to the islands of Gran Canaria , Fuerteventura and Lanzarote . The new diocese of San Cristóbal de La Laguna consists of the islands of Tenerife , La Palma , La Gomera and El Hierro . The division of the Canary Islands into two dioceses became effective on December 21, 1819. The driving force behind the establishment of the diocese was a Catholic bishop and confessor to King Ferdinand VII of Spain , Cristóbal Bencomo y Rodríguez .

Due to the political turmoil in Madrid , the first bishop of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Luis Folgueras y Sion, could not take office until July 12, 1825. The diocese was led in the meantime by various capitular vicars . After Bishop Folgueras y Sion was appointed Archbishop of Granada in 1848 , the bishopric remained vacant . The Concordat of 1851 provided that an auxiliary bishop should be appointed for the diocese of the western Canary Islands , but this never happened. In August 1859 the bishop of the (eastern) Canary Islands, based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, was appointed as apostolic administrator . Other administrators followed. When the beginning of the reign of King Alfonso XII. As relations between Spain and the Holy See improved, it was planned to replace the bishopric. On March 18, 1877, Pius IX appointed the Benedictine monk Ildefonso Infante y Macias as the second bishop of San Cristóbal de la Laguna. The current bishop, Bernardo Álvarez Afonso , was born on June 29, 2005 by Benedict XVI. appointed to the office.
