Ricardo María Cardinal Carles Gordó (born September 24, 1926 in Valencia , Spain , † December 17, 2013 in Tortosa , Spain) was Archbishop of Barcelona .

Life

Ricardo María Carles Gordó received his secondary education at a Jesuit school before entering the seminary in Valencia . He studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Colegio Corpus Christi in Valencia . He was ordained a priest on June 29, 1951 in Valencia. After a doctorate at the Pontifical University of Salamanca , he was in 1953 in Canon Law for Dr. iur. can. PhD .

He then worked from 1953 to 1969 in the community pastoral care , including in Ternes de Valldigna and Valencia, where he was particularly involved in youth work. He worked as head of the Christian Workers' Youth (CAJ) and rector in the formation of deacons , episcopal commissioner for priests and diocesan councilor for the family apostolate .

On June 6, 1969 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. appointed bishop of the diocese of Tortosa . He was ordained bishop on August 3, 1969, by Luigi Dadaglio , Apostolic Nuncio in Spain; Co-consecrators were his predecessor Manuel Moll y Salord and Rafael González Moralejo , auxiliary bishop in Valencia . In the Spanish Bishops' Conference he was chairman of the subcommittee on family and the president of the commission on seminaries and universities. In Tortosa he convened the first diocesan synod after the Second Vatican Council .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Barcelona on March 23, 1990. He was a participant of the 8th Ordinary Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in the Vatican from September 30th to October 28th 1990. In Barcelona he founded the Instituto de Teología Espiritual .

As a cardinal priest with the titular church Santa Maria Consolatrice al Tiburtino , Carles Gordó belonged to the college of cardinals from November 26, 1994 . Pope John Paul II called him to the Congregation for Catholic Education and in 1995 to the Council of Cardinals for the Study of the Organizational and Economic Problems of the Holy See. From 2000 to 2006 he was a member of the Prefecture for Economic Affairs of the Holy See .

His age-related resignation was granted by Pope John Paul II on June 15, 2004. Cardinal Carles Gordó took part in the 2005 conclave , but did not take part in the 2013 conclave because he was over 80 years of age. He died in December 2013 at the age of 87 in Santa Cruz Hospital in Tortosa.

Lluís Cardinal Martínez Sistach , his successor as Archbishop of Barcelona, Carlos Osoro Sierra , Archbishop of Valencia, Carlos Cardinal Amigo Vallejo , Archbishop Emeritus of Seville and eight other bishops took part in the funeral mass for Ricardo María Carles .

As he had determined in his will, he was buried in the Basilica de la Virgen de los Desamparados in his hometown of Valencia.

In the Spanish Bishops 'Conference CEE Ricardo María Carles was a member of the Commission for Business Travel from 1972 to 1978, he was a member of the Commission for the Clergy from 1972 to 1975 and was President of the Bishops' Subcommittee on the Family (1978-1984) and the Episcopal Commission for Seminars and universities (1984–1990). From 1990 to 2005 he was a member of the Executive Committee of the CEE and from 1999 to 2002 its vice-president.

Ricardo María Carles campaigned for the beatification of the architect of the Sagrada Família Basilica , Antonio Gaudí , whom he defended against the accusation of having been a Freemason.
