Bergen aan Zee

Bergen aan Zee is a Dutch coastal town on the North Sea in the municipality of Bergen ( North Holland province ). It is a good ten kilometers west of Alkmaar and has 375 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).

Bergen aan Zee was founded in 1906 with the intention of creating a seaside resort there for the municipality of Bergen. Today there are five hotels as well as numerous guest houses and private quarters in the immediate vicinity of the coast - as well as residential areas for the local population and a handful of exposed villas. In contrast to many other seaside resorts, there are no extensive bungalow parks or campsites. A citizens' initiative has prevented the planned extensive development of the Het Engelse Veld dune area in the village so far.

In addition to the sandy beach, the largest tourist attraction is the lake aquarium . For shopping and a wide range of services, residents and holidaymakers are dependent on larger inland locations, especially the center of the municipality of Bergen about five kilometers away. The only road there is the spur road N 510 ( Zeeweg ), via which the bus line 262 runs seasonally. For pedestrians and cyclists there are several alternative routes through the largely forested North Holland dune reserve, which stretches inland between the coast and mountains. For some of these routes you are expected to purchase an access card, which you can use to help preserve the nature reserve . From 1909 to 1955, a railway line with the popular “Bello” steam locomotive ran between Bergen aan Zee and Bergen (and from there to Alkmaar).
