life and work
Eugène Dodeigne learned his trade from 1936 from his father, who was a stonemason . After completing his craft training, he studied drawing and sculpture , initially at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tourcoing , later at the school of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the workshop of Marcel Gimond . His first sculptures were still made of wood, he then switched to stone sculptures.
His early work was influenced by the abstract , smooth forms such as those used by Constantin Brâncuși . In the 1960s his work became more expressive and harsh. His work during this period was inspired by the art of Alberto Giacometti and Germaine Richier .
Eugène Dodeigne exhibited his first works in 1953 in the gallery Marcel Evrard in Lille and in the gallery Veranneman in Brussels , 1957 at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, then in the Galerie Claude Bernard , the Galerie Pierre Loeb and the Galerie Jeanne Bucher in Paris . Exhibitions in Berlin , Hanover , Rotterdam , Brussels and Pittsburgh followed . In the late 1950s and 1960s Dodeigne found wide international recognition. In 1959 he was a participant in documenta II and in 1964 in documenta III in Kassel . He exhibited at the 1959 Biennale de Paris and was represented in 1967 at the Tokyo Biennale and the Exposition internationale de sculpture contemporaine in Montréal .

After 1968 he devoted himself to a series of sculptures that combine the smooth surfaces and the irregular volumes of the exploded stone in a new way. From the 1970s onwards, Dodeigne's monumental sculptures were erected in the open air in numerous cities, museums and their parks. These include Lille , Dunkirk , Villeneuve-d'Ascq , Antwerp , Liège , Hanover ( sculpture mile ), Utrecht , later Bobigny , Argentan , Paris , Grenoble in 1998, then Créteil .
In 1987 he received the Nordhorn City Art Prize . His work is in numerous public collections, particularly in Northern Europe ( Germany , Austria , Belgium , Norway , the Netherlands ), France , the United States and Switzerland .
A well-known work of Eugène Dodeigne is the memorial that on June 2, 1989 in Hannover-Misburg of the local at the site of the memorial subcamp of the Neuengamme concentration camp was built.
In 1999 Dodeigne was elected to succeed Étienne Martin in the Académie des Beaux-Arts .
