Martin Murray (* 27. September 1982 in St Helens , Merseyside ) is an English professional boxer in the middleweight division .

Boxing career

He started boxing at the age of ten, trained at the Glass Boxing Gym in St Helens and won the English amateur welterweight championships in 2004. In 2007 he switched to the professional camp and beat a number of opponents, including Danny Butler (13-0), Joe Rea (6-0), Kevin Concepcion (14-1), Sergei Khomitski (22-5) and Schalwa Jomardaschwili (26- 1).

In his 20th fight on July 16, 2010 in Bolton , he won the Commonwealth Middleweight Championship by unanimous victory over Peter Mitrevski junior (23-6) . In his next fight on November 26th of the same year in Bolton, he also won the Intercontinental Championship of the WBA by tKo victory in the third round against the Brazilian Carlos Nascimento (25-2) . He defended this in April 2011 through tKo in the fourth round against John Anderson Carvalho (21-4), also from Brazil. On June 18, 2011 he also won the British Championship by an early win in the fifth round against Nick Blackwell (8-0).

On December 2, 2011 he boxed in Mannheim against Felix Sturm (36-2) for the super world title of the WBA in the middleweight division. In the fast-paced fight, Sturm hit his leading hand more clearly than Murray, but this had the higher stroke frequency. After twelve rounds the fight was scored as a draw (112: 116, 114: 114, 115: 113), which meant that Sturm remained the title holder. Murray defeated Karim Achour (13-2) over ten rounds in June 2012 and boxed against Jorge Navarro (12-0) for the WBA interim world championship on November 24, 2012 . He had the Venezuelan on the ground in the first round and finally won early through tKo, since the corner of the ring from Navarro gave up the fight in the sixth round.

On April 27, 2013 he boxed against world number one Sergio Gabriel Martínez (50-2) for the WBC World Championship , but lost over twelve rounds on points. At the end of June 2014 he defeated Max Bursak (29-2) unanimously on points. In October 2014 he won early against Domenico Spada (39-5).

In another World Championship fight on February 21, 2015 in Monaco, he lost to Gennady Golowkin (31-0) by tKo in the eleventh round. In November 2015 he fought in Hanover against Arthur Abraham (43-4) for the WBO world title in super middleweight, but was narrowly and controversially defeated in a split decision (115: 112 Murray, 115: 112 & 116: 111 Abraham) Points.

In June 2016 he also lost to George Groves (23-3) on points. In November 2016 he unanimously defeated Nuhu Lawal (23-0) in Monte-Carlo . In April 2017, he defeated Gabriel Rosado (23-10) in Liverpool by majority decision. In September 2017 he defeated Arman Torosyan (18-3) by knockout in the fourth round.

On June 23, 2018, he beat Roberto Garcia (41-3) in the fight for the WBC Silver Middleweight title, but lost it in December 2018 by a narrow point defeat to Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam (36-3).
