Kabary Salem (born February 12, 1968 in Cairo ) is a former American professional boxer of Egyptian origin.

Career

Kabary Salem began professional boxing in Brooklyn in 1997 and won the NABF championship in September 1999 by knocking out Randie Carver , who died as a result of the fight. In another NABF title fight in April 2002, he lost on points against the multiple world championship challenger Antwun Echols.

In January 2003 he defeated Manu Ntoh and won the NABO title of the WBO and defended this against Ray Berry in April of the same year. His fight for the intercontinental championship of the WBO ended valueless in March 2004 after his opponent Rudy Markussen was unable to continue fighting due to an accident-related cut injury.

On May 8, 2004, he boxed in Dortmund for the interim WBO world title against Mario Veit . Salem received two point deductions for head butts, and he also broke the referee's nose in an unintentional collision. After the full twelve rounds, however, Veit was controversially declared the winner 2-1, although most observers saw Salem clearly ahead.

Probably the strongest fight of his career he delivered on October 22, 2004 in Edinburgh, Scotland, against the undefeated WBO world champion Joe Calzaghe (37-0, 30 knockout). Salem was able to assert himself over the full twelve rounds and get a knockdown against the title holder in the fourth round, both boxers also received point deductions for headbuttons. In the end, however, Calzaghe was declared the point winner.

He played his last fight on September 16, 2005 in Montreal against Lucian Bute , where he suffered the only premature loss of his career.
