Michael Löwe (born February 13, 1969 in Hunedoara , Hunedoara County ; born Mihai Leu ) is a former Romanian boxer who held a WBO welterweight title.

amateur

As an amateur, Löwe won the world junior light welterweight championship in Havana in 1987 . He defeated Eamonn Loughran in the final . At the 1990 World Cup tournament in Dublin , he achieved third place in the welterweight division. His record was 190-10.

Professional career

In 1991 he became a professional at Universum Box-Promotion in Germany under the name "Michael Löwe" and won 26 times against unknown opponents in the welterweight division by 1997. Then on February 22, 1997 he won the vacant title of the WBO against the Panamanian Santiago Samaniego , but was not recognized by any trade journal as a real world champion. On September 26, 1997, he controversially defended the belt against the Irish Olympic champion Michael Carruth, who had failed among the professionals . He then ended his career unbeaten and became a rally driver and organizer of rally races in Romania .
