Eamonn Loughran (born June 5, 1970 in Ballymena ) is a former British professional boxer and WBO welterweight champion.

Career

As an amateur he competed for Ireland and in 1987 was able to fight for second place in the light welterweight division at the Junior World Championships in Havana . He defeated the American Tony Robinson, the Cuban Armando Mariño and the Canadian Anthony Duffin, before he lost in the final to the Romanian Michael Löwe , who was still boxing under his maiden name Mihai Leu.

In 1987 he switched to the pros and boxed in Northern Ireland , England , Panama , Spain , Wales and Germany during his build-up phase . In November 1992 he won the Commonwealth title by an early win over Donovan Boucher, later challenger to the World Cup for Crisanto España . In February 1993 he defended the title prematurely against Michael Benjamin from Guyana. With a record of 21 wins, one draw and one disqualification defeat , he boxed in Belfast in October 1993 for the vacant WBO World Championship, which the Dane Gert Bo Jacobsen had resigned. Loughran defeated the American Lorenzo Smith, who had failed the previous year in the fight for the WBO light welterweight title against Carlos González , unanimously on points.

In 1994 he defended the title against the Italian and European champion Alessandro Duran, as well as against the US-American ex-WBO world champion Manning Galloway . In 1995 he was able to claim the title against North America champion Tony Gannarelli, and twice against the Dominican Angel Beltre. In April 1996 he finally lost through tKo in the first round against the Mexican José Luis López and ended his career.

In 2014 he was inducted into the Ballymena Sporting Hall of Fame .
