Akhmed Jakubowitsch Kotijew ( Russian Ахмед Якубович Котиев ; born January 15, 1968 in Ordzhonikidze ) is a former Russian professional boxer and WBO welterweight champion.

Boxing career

He started his professional career in Moscow in 1991 with two points wins. In his third duel he lost in the fight for the Russian light welterweight championship on points against Viktor Baranov. In July 1994, he defeated the two-time EM challenger Mark McCreath in Berlin . Against Mark Ramsey, he won the interime WBC international welterweight championship in May 1995 . In January 1998, the intercontinental championship of the WBO followed by knockout against the Belgian southpaw Douglas Bellini.

With a unanimous victory over the undefeated US American Leonard Townsend (29-0) in February 1998 in Stuttgart , he became the WBO world welterweight champion. He defended the title for the first time in May 1998 unanimously against the Argentinian Paulo Sánchez (22-3) and in November also unanimously against Santos Cardona (37-7) from Puerto Rico, who had already boxed four times for a world title. In April 1999 he won by tKo against Peter Malinga (24-4) and in November 1999 on points against Daniel Santos (21-1). In the rematch in May 2000, however, he lost his world title to Santos by knockout in the fifth round and ended his career.
