Tommy McCarthy (* 4. November 1990 in Belfast , Northern Ireland ) is a British boxer in the cruiserweight division .

Amateur career

McCarthy boxed for Ireland as an amateur. In 2005 he won a bronze medal at the European Schools Championships in Russia and in 2008 also a bronze medal at the World Youth Championships in Mexico .

In the adult division, he won the silver light heavyweight medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India after losing to Callum Johnson in the final, and was Irish heavyweight champion in 2012 and 2013. In the European Olympic qualification in 2012 in Trabzon , he defeated Alem Colpa and József Darmos , but was then eliminated in the semifinals against Vladimir Cheles and could not qualify.

At the 2013 European Championships in Minsk , he defeated Tomi Honka, but lost to Teymur Məmmədov in the quarterfinals . He then took part in the 2013 World Championships in Almaty and fought his way to the quarter-finals against Nikolai Mutawski, Samir el-Mais and Emir Ahmatović , where he lost 2-1 to Yamil Peralta .

Professional career

McCarthy fought against Rolandas Cesna in 2014 in his professional debut and won through TKo in the third round. In November 2016 he lost on points to the British Matty Askin and suffered his first professional defeat. In the fight for the WBA Intercontinental title , he also lost to Richard Riakporhe.

On October 11, 2019, he won the WBC International title by beating Fabio Turchi on points .
