John Dovi

John Dovi (born January 2, 1973 in Saint-Maurice-le-Girard , Pays de la Loire region ) is a former French amateur light heavyweight boxer. The seven-time French champion became vice world champion in 1999, Olympic participant in 2000, bronze medalist at the 2001 World Cup and vice European champion in 2002.

Boxing career

John Dovi was around 1.81 m tall during his competitive career and trained at CSL Aulnay-sous-Bois . From 1999 to 2005 he was French light heavyweight champion seven times in a row.

In 1998 he narrowly missed a bronze medal at the 4th Goodwill Games in New York City after losing to Yevgeny Makarenko in the quarterfinals . In 1999 he took part in the 10th World Championships in Houston , where he won the silver medal. He had beaten Claudiu Rasco from Romania, Gurcharan Singh from India and Alexei Trofimow from Ukraine. In the final he met the American local hero Michael Simms and boxed against this tie (3: 3), but Simms was declared the winner by auxiliary points from the referees.

At the 33rd European Championships in 2000 in Tampere , he remained medalless, as he boxed a draw in the quarterfinals against Ali Ismailow from Azerbaijan (4: 4) and Ismailow advanced through auxiliary points. In an international match against Bulgaria, he also defeated Kubrat Pulew . However, by his second place at the World Cup in Houston, he had qualified for the 27th Summer Olympics in Sydney in 2000 . There he beat Shawn Terry Cox from Barbados in the preliminary round and Alexei Katulewski from Kyrgyzstan in the round of 16, but lost in the quarter-finals to Alexander Lebsjak from Russia (11:13).

The 11th World Championships in Belfast , he finished with a bronze medal. After victories against DeAndrey Abron from the USA, Artak Malumjan from Armenia and Alan Reynolds from Ireland, he only had to admit defeat to Yevgeny Makarenko from Russia in the semifinals .

In June 2002 he won the 4-Nations Tournament in Laval , defeating Jacob Garretson from the USA in the semifinals and the German Tino Gross in the final. A month later he started at the 34th European Championships in Perm , where he again advanced to the final by winning against Tino Gross, Aleksy Kuziemski from Poland and Viktor Perun from Ukraine, where he was defeated by Mikhail Gala from Russia.

In June 2003 a bronze medal followed at the 1st EU Championships in Strasbourg , after he had beaten Clemente Russo from Italy and lost again in the semifinals against Kenneth Egan from Ireland (19:19) by scoring auxiliary points. However, he defeated Kenneth Egan in October of the same year in an international match. In 2005 he finally took part in the 13th World Championships in Mianyang , but lost in the second preliminary round against Yegor Mechonzew from Russia.
