The Sveti Naum Monastery ( Cyrillic Свети Наум , Albanian Shën Naum ) is a monastery founded at the end of the 9th century by St. Naum near Ohrid in North Macedonia . Naum is buried in the monastery. The monastery, together with the city of Ohrid, Lake Ohrid and its surroundings, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site . It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Macedonia due to its historical importance and beautiful location.

The monastery is located in the southwest of the country, on the shores of Lake Ohrid , about 30 kilometers south of Ohrid and only a few hundred meters from the Albanian border. At the foot of the monastery mountain there is a spring pot with a high volume of water. Visitors are rowed through the headwaters in boats.

history

The monastery was around 895 of Naum with the support of the Bulgarian Tsar Boris I and Simeon I founded. After the death of Naum on December 23, 910, the monastery was dedicated in his honor and renamed.

In 1870 a fire destroyed the monastery except for the monastery church. The current facility was built in the following time. After Serbia conquered the region during the Balkan War of 1912, a residence of the Serbian king and the church of St. Ivan Vladimir were built near the monastery . From 1913 to 1925 the monastery belonged to Albania . Ahmet Zogu , who was able to put himself to power in Tirana with Yugoslav help in December 1924, resigned it to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in thanks for their support .

Today there is no longer a convent and only the monastery church, a typical three - aisled cross - domed church , is still used for sacred purposes.

Furnishing

The interior of the church is full of frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Naum and that of other Slav apostles . On the left at the entrance to the monastery, the Bulgarian Tsar Boris I is depicted as the ktitor (founder) of the monastery .

There is a hotel in the monastery and there are several restaurants open in the warmer seasons. Buses and ferries run regularly between Ohrid and Sveti Naum.
