George Clarke (2011)

George Clarke (born May 27, 1974 in Sunderland , United Kingdom ) is a British architect , television presenter , lecturer and writer. He gained fame through his work on the Channel 4 programs The Home Show, The Restoration Man and George Clarke's Amazing Spaces .

Early years

George Clarke was born in Sunderland in 1974, but grew up near the neighboring city of Washington ( Metropolitan County Tyne and Wear ). His mother Anne worked at Oxclose Community School where Clarke attended school. His father, a printer , died when George was 6 years old. His mother later remarried. Due to his confident demeanor, Clarke was a popular but very shy child.

George Clarke's grandfathers were both contractors. After spending his school holidays on and around the construction sites, Clarke decided to become an architect at the age of 12:

“There was nothing else I ever wanted to do. When most of the kids were playing with building blocks and pieces of Lego, I was actually on building sites. "

Clarke left school at 16 and found employment with local architect David W. Johnson. He subsequently graduated with a BTEC in Building and Construction from Wearside College in Sunderland. He then earned a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honors in Architecture and an architectural practice certificate from Newcastle University , followed by a Postgraduate Diploma from London's Bartlett School of Architecture . During his student days, he renovated houses in the time he could spare to make a living.

After graduating in 1995, Clarke worked at FaulknerBrowns in Newcastle upon Tyne . He then took up a job with the world-famous architect Sir Terry Farrell . He worked for him in both London and Hong Kong . In 1998 he founded his own company clarke with Bobby Desai : desai. Her clients included British music and television producer Simon Fuller and British chef Jamie Oliver .

In 2011, Clarke left the company and started a new company called George Clarke + Partners with 25 employees. At the time, Clarke made the following statement:

“I've had a fantastic time at Clarke: desai and I'm proud of all the projects we have completed over the years, but, as you can imagine, my media work has taken me in a different direction and I now want to start a new company that isn't just about architecture, but also covers all aspects of the design, build and property development business. "

The company deals primarily with renovation and modernization projects, but has also designed new buildings.

Between 2001 and 2003, Clarke was a visiting professor at Newcastle University, and in 2011 he was a visiting professor at the School for the Built Environment at the University of Nottingham .

His television career came about by accident. Clarke reached out to a literary agent after he was asked to write a book on architecture without realizing that the agency also represented television. He was then asked to do test recordings for a new Channel 5 show called Build A New Life in the Country , which was struggling to find a suitable charismatic lead actor to front the show. Clarke was eventually offered a job, which he then accepted. He subsequently hosted two more real estate programs for Channel 5 before receiving an offer for Channel 4's The Restoration Man .

Since 2004 he has been the main presenter of the following programs:

  • Sender Channel 5: Property Dreams (2004), Dream Home Abroad (2005) and Build A New Life in the Country (2005–2007)
  • Sender Channel 4: The Home Show (since 2008), The Restoration Man (since 2010), The Great British Property Scandal (2011), The Great British Property Scandal: Every Empty Counts (2012), George Clarke's Amazing Spaces (since 2012) and Old House New Home

Books

Clarke is also the author of several successful books including: Home Bible and Build a New Life: by Creating Your New Home.

Private life

Clarke lives in Notting Hill, West London and is divorced from his wife, Catriona. The couple have three children: Georgie, Emilio and Iona. Clarke has completely renovated his house, which was built in 1910. He converted the interior into a modern house while restoring the exterior to its original appearance.

Clarke was a judge for the Affordable Home Ownership Housing Awards in 2007 .

In April 2012, Clarke was appointed as an independent government advisor to help sell thousands of vacant properties to families in need of permanent safe homes.

Clarke is a patron of the Civic Trust Awards program. He represents the Shelter Housing and Homeless Charity and the Prince's Foundation's Building Community Representative . He is also a passionate supporter of the English football club AFC Sunderland .

Clarke still has families in Blackfell, Washington and Sunderland. He visits the area two or three times a year.

Honors

In July 2012, Clarke carried the Olympic torch through Camden after his brother-in-law, Swiggy Drummond, who was originally intended to do so, died of cancer.

In January 2014, Clarke became an honorary member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), a UK professional association of real estate professionals and property surveyors . He is the youngest person in the history of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors to receive this honor.

In July 2015, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Art from Leeds Beckett University for his contribution to the coastline. He received an honorary doctorate in technology from the University of Wolverhampton in September 2015 and an honorary doctorate from Northumbria University in December 2015 .
