The Vesle [ vɛl ] is a tributary of the Aisne in France ; thus it belongs to the overriding catchment area of the Seine . The Vesle mainly crosses the Marne département , where it originates. Its mouth is in the Aisne department .
The name probably comes from Vidula , which stands for forest river in Gallic .
course
The source of the running water is in Somme-Vesle , about 15 km east of Châlons-en-Champagne . From there, the Vesle flows continuously in a north-westerly direction until it flows into the Aisne as a left tributary after around 139 kilometers near Condé-sur-Aisne , east of Soissons . Between Sept-Saulx and Reims , it runs parallel to the Canal de l'Aisne à la Marne . At its middle course, it flows past the Montagne de Reims Regional Nature Park .
Water quality
In the second half of the 20th century, the Vesle was extremely polluted - with considerable negative effects on fauna and flora. This situation only gradually improved with the construction of a sewage treatment plant in Reims (1963); In 1999 this was replaced by a new system that also complies with stricter water protection guidelines ( ISO 9002).
