Braine is a French commune with 2,213 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Aisne in the region of Hauts-de-France ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Soissons and the canton of Fère-en-Tardenois .

geography

The municipality of Braine is located on the Vesle , about 15 kilometers east of Soissons and 37 kilometers northwest of Reims .

history

Until his death in 561, Braine was the favorite royal palace of Chlothar I.

A county of Braine was founded in the 11th century and later united with the county of Champagne . From 1793 to 2015 the municipality was the main town (French:  chef-lieu ) of the canton of Braine .
