Braine is a French commune with 2,213 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Aisne in the region of Hauts-de-France ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Soissons and the canton of Fère-en-Tardenois .
geography
The municipality of Braine is located on the Vesle , about 15 kilometers east of Soissons and 37 kilometers northwest of Reims .
history
Until his death in 561, Braine was the favorite royal palace of Chlothar I.
A county of Braine was founded in the 11th century and later united with the county of Champagne . From 1793 to 2015 the municipality was the main town (French: chef-lieu ) of the canton of Braine .

Attractions
- The 5th century Abbey of Saint-Yved , belonging to the Premonstratensian since 1130 , was the necropolis of the Capetian Counts of Dreux . It is classified as a monument historique .
- Cellar vaults of the former castle Le Bas ( Château du Bas ) from the 17th century
- so-called "Spanish House", a half-timbered house from the 15th century
