Soupir is a French municipality with 273 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Aisne in the region of Hauts-de-France ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Soissons , the canton of Fère-en-Tardenois and the Val de l'Aisne municipal association .

geography

The community of Soupir is about 18 kilometers south of Laon and 18 kilometers east of Soissons . In the south, the municipality extends to the Aisne and the parallel Aisne Lateral Canal , in the northeast the Oise-Aisne Canal touches the municipality. The ridge of the Chemin des Dames rises north of Soupir .

history

Destroyed village in May 1917

In 1917 the village was the scene of the Battle of the Aisne and was completely destroyed. There are tens of thousands of soldiers' graves in the valley.

Attractions

  • Notre-Dame Church, Monument historique
  • Remains of the Soupir Castle, which was built in the 16th century and rebuilt and expanded in the late 19th century. The castle, which was destroyed in the First World War, was not rebuilt, the ruins are under monument protection (Monument historique).
