The community name is derived from the Latin puteolum . In 2007 the municipality received two flowers at the Concours des Villes et Villes Fleuris competition .

The municipality, located north-northeast of Villers-Cotterêts , includes parts of the Forêt de Retz domain forest . It is touched in the southeast by Route nationale 2 . Neighboring municipalities are Soucy and Montgobert in the north, Fleury and Villers-Cotterêts in the south and Vivières in the west.
