Joinville Bridge over the Marne |
Joinville-le-Pont (Joinville for short) is a French city with 19,133 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Val-de-Marne department in the Île-de-France region . The inhabitants are called Joinvillais .
Joinville-le-Pont borders Paris to the southeast . Other neighboring municipalities are Nogent-sur-Marne , Champigny-sur-Marne , Saint-Maur-des-Fossés , Maisons-Alfort and Saint-Maurice . The Marne divides the city into upper and lower town (Haute Joinville and Bas Joinville), with the actual center in the upper town. Joinville is crossed by National Road 4 .
history
Joinville was originally attached to the city of Saint-Maur. After the French Revolution, the place was called Branche du Pont de Saint-Maur . François d'Orléans , Prince of Joinville and son of Louis Philippe I , gave the place its name in 1831 . The addition le Pont was later added to avoid confusion with the nearby Joinville in the Haute-Marne department in Champagne . In September 1863, the French engineer and inventor Étienne Lenoir drove the Hippomobile motorized carriage he had constructed from Rue de la Roquette in the 11th arrondissement in Paris to Joinville-le-Pont and back. It took him about three hours to cover the 18 kilometers.
Joinville is connected to downtown Paris with the RER A. Day trippers use the railway connection to visit the restaurants on the riverbank, the guinguettes , to swim and fish. Bourvil sings very aptly about the Sunday scene in the chanson A Joinville-le-Pont . The melody of the song was composed by Bourvils accordionist Étienne Lorin in 1952. The author of the text is Roger Pierre.
