Runnymede is an administrative district with borough status in the county of Surrey in England . The administrative seat is Addlestone ; other significant places are Chertsey , Egham , Englefield Green and Virginia Water . In this area, King John Ohneland signed the Magna Carta in a meadow called Runnymede in 1215 after an uprising by the barons .
The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and was created from the merger of the urban districts Chertsey and Egham.
