Five-fold bloom

Rosa laevigata is an evergreen, climbing shrub . The up to 10 meters long stem axes have curved spines . The alternately arranged leaves are pinnate unpaired and usually consist of three leaflets. The hermaphroditic, pleasantly scented flowers are radial symmetry with a diameter of up to 10 centimeters and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five free petals are white. The rose hips, which are orange-red when ripe, are long and studded with bristles.

Occurrence and naming

Its natural range is central China . However, it reached North America as early as the 17th century and spread there as a neophyte . In 1803 the French botanist André Michaux described it in his Flora boreali americana and considered it a plant species native to North America. This has contributed to their common name Cherokee Rose. It depends on hot summers. In North America, it does well south of Georgia in particular . Their preferred locations are rocky areas.

An area with Cherokee roses in Texas has led to a corresponding naming of the neighboring village Rosharon, since the Cherokee rose was identified with the biblical rose of Sharon .

Systematics

Rosa laevigata is the only species of the Laevigatae Thory section of the subgenus Rosa within the genus Rosa . Morphologically it is close to the sections Banksianae and Bracteatae , but molecular genetic studies see them within the clade of the section Pimpinellifoliae .
