Runnymede is a meadow on the River Thames northwest of Egham in Runnymede County, Surrey . It is not far from Staines-upon-Thames , near a ford over the Thames , which was already used as a Roman road . The Magna Carta was signed in Runnymede in 1215 . The council of Anglo-Saxon kings was held in Runnymede under Alfred the Great .

The site is now administered by the National Trust . In the presence of Queen Elizabeth II and Jacqueline Kennedy , a Portland stone memorial designed by landscape architect Geoffrey Jellicoe was unveiled for US President John F. Kennedy on May 14, 1965 .
