The Hippomobile is an automobile that was designed by Étienne Lenoir from 1860. It was powered by an internal combustion engine that Lenoir had also developed himself. Some of these engines are still preserved today.

The vehicle is a three-wheeled cart powered by a Lenoirmotor. Various gases could be used as fuel, including hydrogen , which was generated by electrolysis while driving. On a test drive of 9 km from Paris to Joinville-le-Pont in 1863, the Hippomobile reached an average speed of 3 km / h.

The chassis consisted of a high, rectangular box. The bench for the driver and front passenger was right at the front, a second was located directly behind it a little lower. The rest took up a loading area. Underneath there was a wooden compartment with the drive technology. The engine was installed transversely in the middle and drove a rear wheel via a chain. The tank was located right in the stern, with the ignition system between it and the engine. The axle of the steered front wheel was suspended on both sides on double elliptic leaf springs, the rear axle was not sprung.

The engine works in a similar way to a steam engine. It is a double-acting single-cylinder two-stroke engine without compression with flat slide gas exchange control, external ignition and water cooling. The fuel / air mixture is alternately drawn in on both sides of the cylinder from the disc piston to the center of the stroke and then ignited individually. The flat slide used for control is driven by the crankshaft via an eccentric. The output of the motor is specified as 0.7 kW at 80 min −1 , its efficiency is around 3%. The fuel consumption is therefore very large, which also applies to the lubricant consumption. The ignition system was very unreliable and often failed.
