history

Saint-Germain-de-Paris church

The name Orly goes back to the Latin name Aureliacum and indicates the origin of the place from a Roman foundation. In 829 the place was mentioned as belonging to the Chapter of Notre-Dame in Paris .

In 1346, the English besieged Orly for three months while the residents holed up in the church tower.

Orly has been linked to civil aviation history through its pilot training school since the early 1930s ; this school goes back to a suggestion of the French aviation pioneer Maryse Bastié . This connection to aviation, which also exists through Paris-Orly Airport, is expressed in the municipality's coat of arms with its five stylized aircraft in a silver triangle on a blue background.

Attractions

The restored Saint-Germain-de-Paris church was built in the 12th century. The church tower was partially destroyed during the English siege in the 14th century and not completely rebuilt.
