Maryse Bastié (born February 27, 1898 in Limoges , † July 15, 1952 in Bron , born Marie-Louise Bombec ) was a French aviation pioneer . The record flyer was called an endurance runner in the firmament , a sprinter in the air or our heavenly trump card by her compatriots . In France, schools, theaters and streets still bear her name today.

Life

Maryse Bastié in the early 1920s

Born as Marie-Louise Bombec in France , she became a half -orphan at the age of eleven and grew up in modest circumstances. Their first marriage was divorced after a short time and their son from this marriage died early. In 1924 she married Lieutenant Louis Bastié , a World War II pilot whose passion for flying she took over and obtained a pilot's license in 1925. Despite her husband's death in a crash in 1926, she stuck to this passion and acquired further flight licenses and her first own aircraft. Maryse Bastié was the first French woman to receive a passenger aircraft driver's license in 1928 and set eight world records in the 1930s. On July 28, 1929, she first made a name for itself when she set the solo flight endurance record for women with 26 hours and 48 minutes and, after improving it by Léna Bernstein to over 35 hours, increased it to 37 hours and 55 minutes in 1930.

On June 28, 1931, she took off on her first long-haul flight , which took her in a 40-hp Klemm Kl 25 from Paris via northern France and Germany to Russia. Without a stopover, she reached Urino near Nizhny Novgorod , which was the non-stop long-distance world record for women and made her so well known internationally that she could live from aviation and advertising income in the future. She founded her own flight school. Arthur Sanfourche, the father of the artist Jean-Joseph Sanfourche , was one of their mechanics.

In 1934 she was the first woman to fly the Paris – Tokyo route there and back. After Jean Batten from New Zealand was the first woman to fly over the southern Atlantic, Bastié wanted to fly the same route in less time. On December 30, 1936, she started in a Caudron Simoun from Dakar to Natal ( Brazil ), which she reached in 12 hours 5 minutes, undercutting her competitor by a good hour. The average speed was 260 km / h. Upon her return to France, she was appointed officer of the French Legion of Honor .

From 1951 Basie worked for the Center for Flight Tests (Center d'essais en vol) in public relations. The pilot, who flew her life without serious accidents, died in July 1952 as a passenger in the crash of a Noratlas after an air show at Lyon-Bron airport . She was buried on the Cimetière Montparnasse in the south of the French capital.

In 1955, Maryse Bastié was honored with her picture by issuing a French airmail stamp.
