Location of the municipality

Llívia ( cat. [ ˈʎiβiə ]) is a Spanish municipality with 1417 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019), which is located at an altitude of 1223 m in the Pyrenees .

Although the place is in the Alta Cerdanya , it is administratively assigned to the Catalan comarca Cerdanya (which is also known as Baixa Cerdanya ) in the province of Girona and thus belongs to Spain . It forms an exclave surrounded by French territory and is located immediately across the border near Puigcerdà , the main town of the comarca.

history

The Roman fortress Iulia Lybica was located on the Strata Ceretana, which (coming from Narbonne as Strata Confletana ) led through the strategically important high valley of the Segre River and ended in Lleida . The name of the place is said to go back to Julius Caesar , who had granted him municipal rights. The community developed early on into the capital of the high valley.

In the 8th century Llívia was considered the capital of the county of Cerdanya , but it lost this function as early as 1177 when Puigcerdà was founded five kilometers west and made the capital of Cerdanya.

In 1528 Charles V gave the place the rights of a small town. In the Peace of the Pyrenees of 1659, 33 villages in the eastern part of the Cerdanya fell to France, while Llívia was able to invoke the city rights and remained with Spain.
