World decade

International decades (decades) and international years are proclaimed by the United Nations (UN) to draw the world's attention to particularly important and pressing problems.

Such decades (like the International Years) are determined by resolutions of the General Assembly of the United Nations. The resolutions also provide (long-term) goals and measures to improve the respective problem situation. Depending on the topic, one of the UN organizations is entrusted with the global control and coordination of the decade / year, and the member states are called upon to participate in the implementation of the goals at national level.

• 1990–1999 - International Decade for Disaster Prevention / United Nations Decade of International Law
• 1990–2000 - International Decade for the Elimination of Colonialism
• 1991–1998 - United Nations Fourth Decade of Development / Second Decade of Transport and Communication in Africa / United Nations Decade to Combat Drug Abuse
• 1993–2002 - Second Decade for the Industrial Development of Africa / Asia-Pacific Decade for the Disabled
• 1993–2003 - Third Decade to Combat Racism and Racial Discrimination
• 1994–2004 - International Decade of the World's Autochthonous Peoples
• 1995–2004 - Decade for Human Rights Education
• 1997–2006 - First United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty
• 2001–2010 - International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence for the Children of the World / Second International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism / Decade to Repel Malaria in Developing Countries, especially in Africa
• 2003–2012 - United Nations World Decade of Literacy
• 2005–2014 - Decade to Promote Education for Sustainable Development
• 2005–2015 - International Decade of Action "Water - Source of Life"
• 2011–2020 - International Decade for Biodiversity
