The Maury is an AOC -classified wine-growing region in the French region Occitania northwest of Perpignan . Almost exclusively red grape varieties are grown, three quarters of which are Grenache . Maury is best known for his opulent "Vins doux naturel", which are comparable to port wines .

history

There is evidence that the Templars were already producing wine in the 13th century . Arnaldus de Villanova , doctor at the court of Pope Clement V in Aragon , understood the distillation and preservation of wine. To do this, he brought the still from Andalusia to the south of France and is now considered the first to add eau de vie to wines that are already naturally alcoholic in order to stop fermentation and thus maintain the high sugar content. The designation "naturel" (naturally sweet) does justice to this fact. In contrast to the port wines, only 10 percent eau de vie can be added to the AOC Maury. The base wines must also have at least 15% alcohol. This basic alcohol content is not specified for port wine and up to 20 percent brandy may be added. The area designated for "Vin doux naturel" is 507 hectares .

Geographical location

The AOC Maury is located in the very north of the Languedoc wine-growing region . It extends over 17 × 3 km along the southern slopes of the Massif des Corbières within the four municipalities of St.-Paul-de-Fenouillet , Maury , Tautavel and Rasiguères . Maury is hilly and is a little higher than the two neighboring and comparable growing areas Banyuls and Rivesaltes . The soil is very homogeneous and consists almost entirely of thin brown slate. Maury is a very hot and dry terroir, hence the low basic yield .
