Life

Durliat was the son of a weaver and attended school in Vesoul and the École normal supérieure (Saint-Cloud) with a degree in history in 1945 (Agrégation). He had previously worked as a librarian during World War II. From 1945 to 1954 he taught at the Lyceum in Perpignan . He also published studies on Romanesque art in Roussillon , which in 1954 earned him a position as a researcher for the CNRS . He was also conservator for the Eastern Pyrenees area. From 1958 he taught at the University of Toulouse (Le Mirail). In 1961 he received his doctorate from the Sorbonne (Docteur è lettres, title of the dissertation: L'art dans le Royaume de Majorque) and the following year he was professor of medieval art at the University of Toulouse.

After he helped organize an exhibition on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in Ghent in 1985, he published a book in 1990 about art along the pilgrimage route. In this context, he was against the restoration of St-Sernin de Toulouse to the state before the restoration of Viollet-le-Duc (1860 to 1877), which was decided in 1993 and which was previously controversial.

In addition to regional studies of Romanesque art, he also published complete accounts of Romanesque and art of the early Middle Ages.
