The DDR volleyball championship of the men was in 1980/81 held for the 30th time. The SC Dynamo Berlin managed the unbeaten title - hat trick , in which it won the third championship in a row after 1978 and 1979 . As a precaution, the start of the championship was due to the Olympic qualification taking place in Sofia and the preparation for the Olympic volleyball tournament in Moscow in 1980, which was necessary in the event of participation . Due to the late start, the final decision on the award of the title was not made until the last tournament in mid-January 1981.

The four club teams ( SC Dynamo Berlin , SC Traktor Schwerin , SC Leipzig and TSC Berlin ) determined the champions in four tournaments. In the tournaments everyone played against everyone.
