The DDR volleyball championship of the men was 1986/87 held for the 36th time. It began on October 15, 1986 and ended on February 21, 1987. After a one-year break, SC Leipzig secured its 18th championship, ahead of the defending champions TSC Berlin . The HSG KMU Leipzig was relegated to the subordinate GDR league .

mode

As in the previous year, the volleyball GDR Oberliga started with eight teams. First, a preliminary round was played in the mode "everyone against everyone" in a round trip and a second round. The final placements then resulted in the fixtures for the play-off quarter-finals. The winners of this then determined the GDR champions and the losers the relegated to the GDR league or the participants for relegation to remain in the upper league.

In the preliminary round, the "everyone against everyone" mode was played in a round trip and a second round. The final placement of the preliminary round resulted in the positions 1 - 8 • 2 - 7 • 3 - 6 • 4 - 5 in the play-off quarter-finals.
