The DDR volleyball championship of the men was 1985/86 held for the 35th time. It began on October 26, 1985 and ended on February 9, 1986. After a one-year break, TSC Berlin secured its second and last championship in the GDR, ahead of SC Dynamo Berlin and the defending champions SC Leipzig . BSG Chemie PCK Schwedt rose to the subordinate GDR league .

mode

The new volleyball GDR Oberliga consisted of eight teams again after 1964 and consisted of the usual four club teams of the so-called Klubliga and the first four of the old Oberliga 1984/85. The games were played according to the round system with preliminary round, A-final round (championship round) and B-final round (relegation round), each with a round trip from the end of October 1985 to the beginning of February 1986. The results from the preliminary round were completely transferred to the final round.

Preliminary round

In the preliminary round, the "everyone against everyone" mode was played in a round trip and a second round. The first four teams qualified for the A-final round, in which the champions were determined. The last four teams had to go to the B-final round and determined who were relegated to the GDR league.

The volleyball GDR league, which was subordinate to the Oberliga, consisted of only one season this season.
