Andreas Marx (born February 22, 1968 in Lübeck ) is a German chemist and professor at the Chair for Organic Chemistry / Cellular Chemistry at the University of Konstanz .

life and work

Marx studied chemistry at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg (Germany), the University of Sussex (United Kingdom) and at the Ruhr University in Bochum . In 1994 he received a diploma from the Ruhr University Bochum and did his doctorate from 1994 to 1997 at the University of Basel in the working group of. Bernd Giese . This was followed by a post-doc stay from 1997 to 1999 in Japan at Nagoya University with Hisashi Yamamoto . In 1999 he took up a position as group leader at the Kekulé Institute for Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , where he habilitated as a mentor under Michael Famulok in 2003. In 2004 he accepted an offer for the chair of organic and cellular chemistry in the chemistry department at the University of Konstanz .

Andreas Marx's research is located at the interface between biology, chemistry and applied, molecular biological applications. In brief, he deals with the synthesis of functional biomolecules, such as nucleotides, oligonucleotides, proteins and enzymes. These, mostly modified biomolecules, can then be used to research and test complex biological systems. In particular, his research results on modified nucleotides , directed evolution of DNA polymerases , poly (ADP-ribose), adenylation and epigenetics should be mentioned here. His lively research activities are reflected in a large number of publications and successful collaborations, especially with biologists and chemists. In addition, he has an above-average success rate in soliciting third-party funding, which earned him the unofficial title of “third-party funding king” among colleagues. His work on the selectivity of DNA polymerases, mechanistic elucidation of the so-called A-rule of DNA polymerases by means of crystal structure analysis, various methods for the detection and quantification of epigenetic markers in DNA and RNA by PCR or DNA sequencing , as well as new ones, are notable among others landmark discoveries in adenylation of proteins. His research also resulted in numerous patent applications and the founding of a company in 2014 (myPOLS Biotec GmbH) that specializes in DNA polymerases and their applications in biotechnology.

Andreas Marx has received numerous awards and prizes, including the Karl Heinz Beckurts Prize in 2014 and the František Šorm Memorial Medal from the Czech Academy of Sciences in 2017 .
