Bernd Giese

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bernd Giese (* 2. June 1940 in Hamburg ) is a German chemist who primarily with bio-organic radical and photochemical reactions involved.

Life

Giese studied at the Universities of Heidelberg , Hamburg and Munich , where he in 1969 by Rolf Huisgen with the work contributions to the mechanism of amine addition to acetylene-Carbo nests doctorate was. He completed his habilitation in 1976 at the University of Freiburg . From 1969 to 1971 he worked in pharmaceutical research at BASF in Ludwigshafen. In the following years he conducted research at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster (1971–1972) and the University of Freiburg (1972–1977) up to his first appointment as full professor at the Technical University of Darmstadt (1977–1988). Giese has been Professor at the Institute for Organic Chemistry at the University of Basel since 1989 . Giese has been a visiting professor at the University of Friborg since 2010 .

In 1999 he was admitted to the Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina and in 2003 a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Act

Giese initially worked on the kinetics and selectivity of complex organic reactions and introduced radical (CC) linkages as a synthetic method. The addition of carbon radicals to olefins he discovered is also known as the Giese reaction . His current research focuses on radical reactions in biological systems, in particular electron transfer through DNA and peptides and the radical cleavage of DNA, peptides and lipids . The clarification of the so-called hopping mechanism of electron transfer processes in DNA, which show a dependency on the nucleotide sequence , is particularly important . Further research areas are the stereoselective synthesis of cyclic amino acids and peptides with radicals and biradicals through photoinduced H abstraction, as well as the application of novel protective groups for organic synthesis and combinatorial chemistry that can be split off by photo reactions .

Science awards

Giese's scientific awards include the Karl Winnacker Scholarship (1977), the Carl Duisberg Memorial Prize (1977), the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize (1987), the Tetrahedron Prize (2005), the Emil Fischer Prize Medal (2006) and the Paracelsus Prize of the Swiss Chemical Society (2012).
