The Samochód pancerny wz. 29 , also known as Ursus or CWS , was a heavy armored automobile that was used by the Polish Army during World War II . However, only a handful of these armored vehicles were used in the Polish Defense War of 1939 .
History and description
The car was developed in 1929 by the Polish inventor Rudolf Gundlach . The chassis of the Ursus A2 truck served as the basis and the armored shell was built by CWS, Warsaw. The main armament consisted of a short French 37mm cannon in the turret front, 7.92mm machine guns on the right and left side of the turret rear (the cannon and machine guns were all operated by the commander), and another 7.92 -mm-MG in the rear of the fuselage (operated by the rear gunner). While this arrangement helped stabilize the tower well, it was difficult to operate. The right turret machine gun was removed in the mid-1930s. The car had 96 projectiles for the cannon and 4032 rounds for the machine guns on board.
For the 1920s, the car was adequately armored and armed, but underpowered, had no four-wheel drive (which made its off-road capability worse) and had a tall silhouette. Because of these shortcomings, only 10 to 13 cars were built.
Calls
Although obsolete in 1939, the car was still in service at the outbreak of World War II . Eight vehicles were added to the Modlin Army's 11th Cavalry Brigade as scouts. They did well in combat, but by September 16 they were all destroyed.
