František Šorm

František Šorm (born February 28, 1913 in Prague ; † November 18, 1980 there ) was a Czech chemist ( organic chemistry , biochemistry ).

Life

Sorm studied chemistry at the Technical University of Prague and received his doctorate there in 1936. Then he was a chemist at the Skoda works. In 1945 he became a private lecturer and in 1946 at the University of Chemical Technology in Prague and from 1950 to 1952 he was professor of organic chemistry at the Charles University in Prague. In 1952 he was the founding director of the Institute for Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the CSSR.

He examined natural substances such as alkaloids , isoprene derivatives such as sesquiterpenes , steroids and azulenes . He found unusual ring systems. He studied plant silicon compounds and dealt with juvenile hormones as insecticides and with the synthesis of peptides ( oxytocin was first synthesized in his group ). He has authored and co-authored over 1,000 publications.

He was on the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the CSSR, but welcomed the Prague Spring and was forced out of his offices after its suppression and urged to retire early at the age of 60. He was also banned from attending international conferences abroad.

Since 1958 he was a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR . In 1962 he became a member of the Leopoldina . 1962 to 1969 he was President of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. In 1970 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
