Friedrich Margrave

Friedrich Markgraf (born February 1, 1897 in Berlin-Friedenau ; † March 8, 1987 in Zurich ) was a German botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Markgr. "

Live and act

After high school graduated Markgraf a degree in Biology at the Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Berlin and graduated in 1922 with the promotion of Dr. phil. with a dissertation on The Bredower Forest near Berlin: A botanical-ecological study .

As Adolf Engler's last doctoral student , he continued his Botanical Yearbooks . He also finished August of Hayek's Prodromus Florae Peninsulae Balcanicae (Volumes 2, 3). He was "Regional Adviser" for Albania in Flora Europaea and took over the revision of volume IV / 1 of Hegis " Illustrierter Flora von Mitteleuropa " .

In 1939 he married Ingeborg Dannenberg (1911-1996), a botanist who specializes in fescue (Festuca) and has a doctorate .

After completing his habilitation , he initially took on a professorship for botany at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Berlin and, after the Second World War, at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich . There he was also director of the Munich-Nymphenburg Botanical Garden (1956–1958). In 1958, Margrave became full professor of botany at the University of Zurich and was director of the Zurich Botanical Garden and the Institute for Systematic Botany until his retirement .

During his teaching and research activities, he dealt in particular with questions about botanical systematics, the morphology of plants and geobotany, and he also undertook research trips to the Mediterranean . In Albania in particular , he created important foundations for the subsequent research into the local flora.

Honors

The plant genus Allomarkgrafia Woodson from the dog venom family (Apocynaceae) is named after Margrave .
