Mai Zetterling ( pronunciation : [ ˌmaʝ ˈsɛtːəɹliŋ ], * May 24, 1925 in Västerås as Mai Elizabeth Zetterling ; † March 17, 1994 in London ) was a Swedish actress , film director and screenwriter and book writer .

Life

Mai Zetterling came from a humble background and was accepted into the Royal Dramatic Theater Dramatens elevskola , the training center of the Royal Dramatic Theater in Stockholm , at the age of 17 . While still a student (1942–1945) she received her first roles and was a member of the ensemble until 1947. After that she had an engagement in London and played in plays by Anouilh , Chekhov and Ibsen .

She made her film debut in 1941 at the age of 16 in a film by Gunnar Olsson . She became internationally known with her portrayal of the victim of a sadistic professor in Die Hörige (1944) by Alf Sjöberg . Ingmar Bergman wrote the script for this film . From 1950 she appeared in addition to her work at the theater mainly in British films.

From 1944 to 1953 she was married to the actor and dancer Tutte Lemkow . The marriage resulted in a son and daughter. In 1959 she married the screenwriter David Hughes .

In 1960 Mai Zetterling made her debut as a director. She worked for the BBC and made short films and documentaries about dealing with ethnic minorities, discrimination against women and problems facing adolescents. She received an award at the Venice Film Festival for her short film The War Game (1963) . From 1964 she and her husband also wrote screenplays and directed in Sweden. Her films provoke with the themes of loneliness and sexual obsessions. The literary film Loving Couples (1964) was rejected in Cannes and Secret Games (1966) was excluded from the competition in Venice because of its drastic scenes. The audience was then ripe for Die Mädchen .

After she was portrayed in the documentary Women in Direction (1988), Zetterling appeared in front of the camera for the first time since the mid-1960s in Nicolas Roeg's The Witches (1989).

Since the mid-1960s, Mai Zetterling has published several novels.
