You can only love for two is a 1961 British comedy film by Sidney Gilliat with Peter Sellers and Mai Zetterling in the leading roles. The story is based on the 1955 novel That Uncertain Feeling by Kingsley Amis .
action
John Lewis is a misanthropist as he is in the book. For him, everyday existence is a series of conspiracies: the landlady pokes her nose curiously into everything, the drain pipes are notoriously clogged, everything goes wrong in the household and deer are jumping around on the wallpaper. The cramped rooms, the overstrained wife and the two annoying children make life seem like one big nuisance. Only the sight of pretty, young girls he meets every day on the way to work in the city library brings a little shine to his day-to-day life, which is perceived as gloomy. There is nothing more than looking, because John does not dare to address the female gender. One day, the pretty Liz Gryffyd-Williams appears in his life. She is the complete opposite of John: fun-loving and blessed with the bank account of a socially established man. Liz's attempts to flirt are very reluctant, and her husband chairs the committee that could approve the promotion of Lewis that he so desperately needs for his ailing bank account.
Lewis is interested in the lady, but not so much in order to be able to achieve a professional as well as financial advancement, but rather because Liz combines in one woman everything that he secretly longed for. John fights bravely against her cautious attempts at seduction, but it is not only up to him that he remains modest and steadfast. Because sometimes said husband returns to his wife Liz early, sometimes curious cows get in his way. One day Lewis stands before the committee that has to decide on his possible promotion. He gets what he wants ... thanks to the kind influence of Liz who spun her threads. In celebration of the day, the two do a lift, and Liz now expects John Lewis to use her understanding of gratitude. But he's a better husband than expected. John knows what he's got in his little world, his wife and two children at home, and so he declines the upcoming promotion, leaves Liz confused and returns home ... to home and hearth.
