Öregrund is a locality ( tätort ) in the Swedish province of Uppsala County with about 1,600 inhabitants. It is one of the smallest former cities in Sweden.
history
The place is notable for being one of the best-preserved wooden cities in the country. Because of this fact, Öregrund is a popular tourist destination. The population of the place doubles every summer. In contrast to the wooden buildings, the medieval stone church stands on a hill. Öregrund has not experienced any significant expansion over the centuries, as there is no significant industry and also due to its proximity to the village of Östhammar . There have already been seven major fires in Öregrund, but the main part of the development dates from the 18th or 19th century.
The place arose as a suburb of Östhammar and received city rights around 1490 . During the Kalmar Union , Öregrund was burned down on the orders of Christian II , but Gustav Wasa had it rebuilt. The place served mainly as a port for the iron products from Uppland . Öregrund experienced another looting by Russian troops in 1719 in the final phase of the Great Northern War .
At the end of the 19th century, Öregrund developed into a health resort . Many citizens from other Swedish cities bought a summer residence in Öregrund, which was empty at other times of the year. The city ran into economic problems due to falling tax revenues. You soon had to share the mayor with the neighboring town and later became an administrative part of Östhammar.
