Bengtskär [ ˈbɛŋtʃæːr ] is the southernmost inhabited Finnish island and is part of the municipality of Kimitoön . It is located in the Baltic Sea at the entrance to the Gulf of Finland , about 25 km southwest of Hanko , 200 km from Helsinki and 100 km southeast of Turku in the Swedish-speaking part of Finland. Hence the name has its origin. Bengt is a Swedish man's name, skär means a small rock island ( skerry ) in Swedish .
In 1906 a lighthouse was built on the island, the Bengtskär lighthouse , which has also been developed for tourism since the 1990s and is the tallest lighthouse in Scandinavia.
