Runners in the 2006 Twin Cities Marathon

The Twin Cities Marathon ( TCM for short ) is a marathon that has been held since 1982 between the so-called Twin Cities Minneapolis and Saint Paul . The event, which usually takes place at the beginning of October, is organized by the non-profit organization Twin Cities In Motion. The program also includes runs over 10 miles as well as over 5 and 10 km.

history

In 1963, the Minnesota Distance Running Association in Minneapolis launched the Land of Lakes Marathon , which was renamed the City of Lakes Marathon in 1976 . After a run called the St. Paul Marathon was set up in the neighboring city in 1981 , the following year those responsible for both races joined forces to replace the two competing events with a new one that linked the two cities. With 4,563 registrations, the Twin Cities Marathon was the most successful marathon premiere to date in the United States .

route

The route leads past Lake Calhoun, among other places.

The course starts at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis and initially runs south past the Lakes Lake of the Isles , Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet and then around Lake Nokomis to the east. After approximately 15 miles, the runners will reach the Mississippi River , along the banks of which the route heads north, before crossing the river at about 30 miles. The course continues on the other side of the river for about 3 kilometers in a southerly direction along the bank. Then he turns east and heads down Summit Avenue to the destination at the Minnesota State Capitol in Saint Paul.

Because of the combination of cityscape and lake landscape, the organizer also calls the run The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America .
