The German-Polish Joseph-von-Eichendorff-Caritas Central Library (Polish Centralna Biblioteka Polsko-Niemiecka Caritas im. Josepha von Eichendorffa) in the old town of Opole ( Opole ) is a church institution of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Opole , or Caritas , which was inaugurated in 2000 by Archbishop Alfons Nossol .

goals and tasks

The German-Polish library activity in Opole sees itself as an institution in the tradition of the Borromeo Association and its libraries. It was established by Archbishop Alfons Nossol in 1989. The aim is to help the Germans and Poles living in the area of the dioceses of Opole and Gliwice to help them overcome the painful past of both ethnic groups through good media. For this purpose, library buses are also used for the German minority in Opole Silesia, which are intended to support teaching in the bilingual kindergartens and schools and to make reading offers for the minority. For German lessons, there are free book packages with picture books and books for first reading lessons. The Caritas library activity tries to fill a gap and to help people to overcome many reservations and stereotypes through access to appropriate media.

New building

The Caritas library activity began in 1992 with eight regional libraries and two book buses. When it turned out that a coordination office was necessary, the Opole city administration was able to acquire a ruined house in Hospitalstrasse. From 1997 to 2000 the existing building was renovated and a supplementary new building was built according to a design by the architect couple Domicz. The sloping exposed concrete building is intended to be reminiscent of a book pulled out and is connected to the old building via a glass foyer. The project, which cost 1,200,000 zlotys , was financed by the Foundation for German-Polish Cooperation , the Federal Government and numerous sponsors.

The library was inaugurated on May 23, 2000 by Archbishop Alfons Nossol . He called the library a "house of the embodied spirit" that enriches the city of Opole.

“The new house will contribute to the expansion of a culture of reconciling diversity. The library will help to better perceive all cultural dimensions of the country. It is proof of an incipient universality in the country and a courageous look into the future. "

- Archbishop Nossol

Joseph von Eichendorff was chosen to be the patron saint of the central library , because

“Eichendorff collected German, Polish and Moravian songs and stories and woven them into a unity of reconciled three cultures. This distinguishes the special, unusual and universal wealth of our country. Just like the Oder - it belongs to three countries and flows into the already very wide European sea. Eichendorff's poetry full of colors and tones can have a reconciling effect and contribute to our continent regaining a true, Christian face "

- Archbishop Nossol

history
